USA And the Metric System

I remember back around maybe in the late 1970s or early 1980s there was a big push in the U.S to change over to the metric measurement system.  There were gas stations that had changed their pumps and signage over to Liters and, at least in the state I was in at the time, the school system held training sessions for the teachers in preparation for the big changeover so the U.S could be like the rest of the world.

What happened?  I'm not sure but I think the discussion and planned implementation was set up during the time Carter was President.  Then when Reagan came into office the GOP decided the rest of the world should change to be like us.
