End of the year multiple photo essay

The end of the year is a good time to stop and smell the roses and

take good long look at things and

make a note of what you plan to do so that

you won't keep doing the things that cause you headaches over and over.

Games over Hon

In case you haven't read enough articles about how Americans are fat, dumb, broke, and spiraling out of control towards becoming a third world nation, this should do the trick.

Over the past century, Americans have become accustomed to winning every global battle that mattered: two world wars, the space race, the Cold War, the Internet gold rush. Along the way, Americans have enjoyed unprecedented prosperity and lived lives that were the envy of the rest of the world. It was nice while it lasted. Today, while unemployment remains low, home values continue to surge, and fearless American consumers keep spending beyond their means, the land of the free is slowly, but unmistakably, yielding advantages earned over decades to foreigners who work harder, expect less, and, often, are better educated. Taken piecemeal, these shifts are virtually imperceptible to most Americans. But business leaders, top academics, and other experts--especially those who travel abroad frequently--increasingly see America as a nation that has pulled into the slow lane, while upstarts in a hurry outhustle Americans in the race for technological, industrial, and entrepreneurial supremacy. "Every one of the early warning signals is trending downward," frets Intel Chairman Craig Barrett. "We're all fat, dumb, and happy, which is one reason why this is so insidious.

"Bummer. I think I'll go buy a new DVD player, but only if it was made in China by slave labor.

And for years, U.S. students have been migrating away from hard sciences--which tend to be the source of cutting-edge new products and other innovations--toward business, law, and liberal arts degrees. "We had more sports-exercise majors graduate than electrical-engineering grads last year," lamented General Electric Chief Executive Jeffrey Immelt in a January speech. "If you want to be the massage capital of the world, you're well on your way."

This has been kicking around the net for a bit.  I did a bit a searching around and found that some enterprising students in schools in where else but southern California would cut up colored briefs like this making "sports bras" to sell for fund raisers.

The clock in math class

(edited January 7, 2008 to add in the solution for the math challenged - thanks to BoingBoing) This was made by the Triple Nine Society, a high-IQ organization:

Each number is expressed as a calculation involving three instances of the number 9.

For example, 5 o’clock is the square root of nine (3), factorial (3×2x1 = 6), minus 9/9 (6-1 = 5).

The trickiest time is 7 o’clock, whose calculation works out to 6.99999…, with an infinite number of nines. Wikipedia assures us that 0.99999… really does equal 1, so no worries that the clock is cheating there.

How much do you make in a minute?

Update:  The link doesn't go anywhere anymore.  But seeing the paper money picture above should be a clue that you don't earn nearly as much as big companies that the GOP (republicans) give and continue to want to give tax breaks and in turn tax the worker bees more.

Granny knows how to use a hammer

I posted this elsewhere and thought I'd put it here too.

Granny calls Comcast for installation of their "Triple Play" service.

Dudes show up two days late then leave the job undone.

Four days later Comcast cuts all her service off.

Granny goes to Comcast call office to find out the story and gets the big stall and brush off. Granny stews for a couple days.

Granny gets hammer.

Fun begins. Roll tape:

..."they thought just because we're old enough to get Social Security that we lack both brains and backbone."

So, after stewing over it all weekend, on the following Monday, she went downstairs, got Don's claw hammer and said: "C'mon, honey, we're going to Comcast."

Did you try to stop her, Mr. Shaw?

"Oh no, no," he says.

Hammer time: Shaw storms in the company's office.
BAM! She whacks the keyboard of the customer service rep.
BAM! Down goes the monitor.
BAM! She totals the telephone.
People scatter, scream, cops show up and what does she do?
POW! A parting shot to the phone!

"They cuffed me right then," she says.

Her take on Comcast: "What a bunch of sub-moronic imbeciles."

Seems more than a few Bloggers have posted the incident where a Granny got peeved with Comcast and took a hammer to the local office. See my post with a link a couple post back. So Comcast has sent out notices that Reminds Customers Not To Start A Mass Spontaneous Uprising:
"Ms. Shaw's actions were certainly not appropriate under any circumstances and we hope that contributors to these online forums would discourage others from taking physical action against customer service employees."

Then there was the item I read on MSNBC this morning that Comcast is blocking certain email communications mostly between heavy users especially those sending BitTorrent movies.

This one struck me as a reminder of the mess we have to go through these days due to SPAMMERS and such.  Then there's what I'm going through with Delphi and my original Becker's BITZ! Blog there.  I put it on private for a few days, came back and put it back on public.  But since then it continues to behave as if it is still private.  I posted a note to Gunter in the PLUS forum but forgot to leave the webtag for the Blog.  It's too late and I'm too tired to go back.  And then there is the problem they are having with a good number of the member's graphics are not working.

Find the error

This work crew was sent out to install secure vehicle barrier posts to prevent vehicles from parking close to the building.  What could go wrong?

Mother-in-law's wedding invitation

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy.’ They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.~ John Lennon
