Uga IX (Longtime Sub Russ To Get Title)

It's about time. I felt he has long deserved to take the title.

After years of on-and-off service as the University of Georgia’s interim mascot, the English bulldog Russ got the permanent appointment, the UGA Athletic Association announced Thursday.

Russ will be anointed “Uga IX” in a ceremony set for Sept. 15 in Sanford Stadium, before the UGA-Florida Atlantic football game that day, UGA Athletic Director Greg McGarity announced.

Russ came out of obscurity to become interim mascot the first time in 2009, after the untimely death of his half-brother, Uga VII. Georgia’s football team won its first two games with Russ — an upset win over Georgia Tech, and a 44-20 defeat of new SEC member Texas A&M in the Independence Bowl.

Russ retired after the first six games of 2010, but was pressed into service again at the end of the 2010 football season when Uga VIII took ill. Uga VIII died in February 2011, and Russ was on the sidelines for all 14 games last fall.

His record overall is a so-so 14-9, and he’s now on a two-game losing streak. Georgia lost its final two games of the 2011 season, a 42-10 whipping by LSU in the SEC championship game, and a 33-30 loss to Michigan State in the Outback Bowl.

Sonny Seiler, patriarch of the Savannah family that owns the Uga line of bulldogs, had at first resisted making Russ an official Uga. With big tan spots on his back, Russ doesn’t have the pure white coat that recent Ugas have sported. And he’s not in the direct line of inheritance.
But with no heir apparent for 2012, Russ will now get the nod.

“Like many great and memorable Bulldogs, Russ has earned the opportunity to serve in this capacity,” UGA President Michael Adams said in a statement. “I am confident that he will represent the Bulldog Nation very well and continue the grand tradition of Ugas.”

Not everyone agrees.

“I don’t like it,” said Andrea Haigood, a UGA senior human development and family science major from Decatur.
Russ has served faithfully, but he’s not in the direct Uga breed line, she said. “I know it’s not major, but Ugas have been so tradition-based. He should be in that blood line.”

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy.’ They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.~ John Lennon
